Why Happiness?

Is it possible to be deeply happy?

Should we even be seeking happiness — or is there something more?

With so many children, young people, and adults struggling with poor mental health, it’s vital not only to support those in need but also to help everyone discover how to flourish. At UDC, we are passionate about helping people live life well. We believe in a Christian worldview that deeply values the well-being of people.

The Search for Happiness

People have always searched for happiness. When asked, "What do you want in life?" many respond with "I want to be happy." Yet, the idea of pursuing happiness isn’t always taken seriously — it’s sometimes seen as fleeting, superficial, or even self-indulgent.

While advertisers link happiness to possessions, psychologists and people of faith define it as something far deeper—a sense of fulfillment, joy, meaning, or purpose in life. The Christian perspective offers "life in all its fullness" (John 10:10), balancing both the spiritual and material, the present and the future. True happiness isn’t just about what we have—it’s about how we live. It’s a by-product of meaningful choices and involves practicing things like:

  • Savouring, being still and living in the moment

  • Cultivating thankfulness

  • Showing kindness

  • Extending forgiveness

Happiness is also shaped by how we build healthy relationships and care for our mind, body, and soul. When we recognise the connection between the physical and the spiritual in our pursuit of happiness, we not only learn to live well but also begin a journey toward life in all its fullness.

Our courses (The Happiness Lab, Resolve and 10:10) explore happiness in all its depth, and our Table Talk resources create spaces for conversations that truly matter. Everything we offer as a charity is designed to help you—and those around you—discover a richer, more fulfilling life and ask the big and not big questions of life.

And it often starts with one simple but profound question: How can I be happy?

If that’s the question people are asking, let’s explore it together. It’s great place to start.
