Spirituality — What is it? Why is it important? And why is it part of everything we do?
When it comes to caring for ourselves, most people recognise the importance of looking after their body and mind. But what about the soul? Defining the soul — and what we mean by spirituality — can be challenging. With different interpretations and a cultural shift toward secularism, many avoid exploring it altogether. However, we believe that moving away from the spiritual has not improved individual well-being or society as a whole—in fact, quite the opposite.
Research suggests that believing in something greater than oneself can contribute to a deeper sense of purpose and meaning. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, something that is spiritual “relate[s] to or affect[s] the human spirit or soul as opposed to material or physical things.” It’s the step beyond what we experience into what those experiences mean for us and how they shape us.
At its core, spirituality is about meaning, purpose, and identity.
It asks big questions like:
What is my purpose?
What is right and wrong?
What truly matters?
Where does happiness come from?
How do I want to be remembered?
Ultimately, these questions all lead to a deeper reflection on Who am I?
When searching for meaning, people often turn to science, art, careers, politics, psychology, faith, relationships, or even social influencers. Despite these diverse paths, the common thread is the search itself. This shared pursuit of meaning is, in essence, a spiritual journey — one that shapes our lives, our communities, and our world.
Christianity, however, offers a unique answer to this search through faith in God. As a Christian charity, we believe in the importance of exploring the spiritual aspect of who we are through respectful, open conversations. Engaging with spirituality, is not about being told what to believe but about creating space to reflect on our deepest values, strengths, and beliefs — the core of our unique selves.
When we talk about spirituality, we are referring to the search for meaning and purpose beyond the material world. We want to encourage people to be open to the idea that this deeper aspect of who they are exists and truly matters.
