Table Talk Coasters are here

We’re excited to launch Table Talk Coasters – a brand-new way to spark meaningful conversations about life, hope, and faith.

Developed in partnership with the United Reformed Church (URC), our goal is to inspire one million faith-informed conversations across the UK over the next few years.

To drive the initiative forward, 100,000 bespoke coasters are being distributed by the URC each one bearing a unique URC question: “When have you been filled with wonder?” Our own unique Ugly Duckling sets containing 22 questions are now available for anyone to buy at table-talk.org/coasters.

Each coaster is designed to spark a conversation, as well as display a QR code that links to a daily question on our website as well as additional questions, articles and films on a range of topics to help people explore more.

Suitable for use in homes, cafés, churches, universities, workplaces, or even left for someone to pick up from a train table, the coasters can be used by anyone in any space. They can be simply left for someone to ponder on their own, or used in a more intentionally missional way – for example, by volunteers at coffee mornings.

“Anyone can grab a coaster and use it”, says Nathan Jones, CEO of the Ugly Duckling Charity. “These coasters are more than just a place to put a drink. They’re a tool designed to spark real conversations – a low-barrier resource that offers a gentle, inviting entry point to talk about life, hope, and faith.”

Dr Sam Richards, Head of Children's, Youth and Intergenerational Discipleship for the URC said: “Talking about our faith is core to who we are as Christians but not everyone feels comfortable or knows where to start. We jumped on this idea as a simple way of encouraging conversations at any time with anyone of any age. Using the coasters as prompts, no one need ever be lost for words.”

The Revd Lindsey Sanderson, Moderator of the URC’s National Synod of Scotland, says church members have welcomed the initiative enthusiastically. “It’s a simple idea but one which has the potential to spark real missional conversations with so many people. We are all very enthusiastic and look forward to receiving and using the resources.”

The coasters are made “to help strangers connect, friends go deeper, equip churches to reach out, and help people talk at a more meaningful level about life wherever they may be on their journey”, says Nathan. He hopes that by developing partnerships with different organisations, at least 300,000 coasters will be in the hands of people across the country by the end of 2026, inspiring one million conversations by the end of 2027.
